Today’s technologies are advancing at such an astonishing rate. This can make it difficult for even the most avid “techie” to keep pace. Technology is that wonderful thing that brings comfort and convenience to our lives. But, with that comfort and convenience, there often comes a price; and the technology of the cell phone proves no exception. Arguably, as a communication tool, the cell phone has no equal in how it has changed and affected our lives. Mostly, the effect has been positive in many ways. But, as it is with anything, overuse and abuse has brought out its dark side and the effect of unintended consequences. Younger, inexperienced drivers under the age of 20 may be at a higher risk; they garner the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. The National Safety Council reports that at least 23 percent of all traffic crashes, or at least 1.3 million crashes, involve cell phone use. This number can be broken down to an estimated 1.2 million crashes each year involving drivers using cell phones for conversations and the remaining 100,000 or more additional crashes can be related to drivers who are texting. Analyzing this data shows that cell phone conversations are involved in 12 times as many crashes as texting. This seems to dispel the common myth that a texting driver is the more commonly dangerous cell phone activity. Additionally, and maybe surprisingly to some, it is not just our drivers causing dangerous situations on the roadways. Many times, pedestrians entranced with their cell phones are just as dangerous as drivers using them. A study published in Injury Prevention in 2012 reflects that one in three pedestrians is distracted by a mobile device while crossing busy streets. This type of distraction leads to accidents that injure both pedestrians and drivers.

Discovery of cell phones is one of the significant technological advancement in recent times. Their wide use has had a remarkable impact on physical, social, aesthetical, and economic and health aspects of life. Some of the impacts have contributed positively to the life of human kind, but still others have influenced negatively on his life. In both developed and developing countries, cell phones are the main communication tools in all the sectors of the economy. This ranges from the service sector, transport, and in industries.
The first substantial impact of using cell phones is the ease of communication among people. Unlike the landlines, mobile phones are portable, and one can use them in whichever location he or she is as long as there is network coverage. Most people prefer cell phones to landlines due to their convenience and their abilities to send a short message services (SMS). Cell phones enables business people do their work by maintaining correspondence with customers, suppliers, business partners and financial institutions. They have also enabled families retain kinship ties especially due to geographical differences.
The cell phones have made a significant impact on the social life of people. Apart from voice and text services, some cell phones have cameras, alarm clock, and radio and allow access to the internet. Youths take advantage of some of these features in a positive manner to organize and maintain social contacts with friends and relatives. They also heavily utilize social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Skype for entertainment. In the recent years, cell phones carry out mobile money transactions whereby the SIM card is the unique personal identifier. Banks have also made it easier for their customers to access their accounts, check balances, and receive bank statements from their phones.
However, cell phones have come with negative effects to people’s lives. One is that cell phones have influenced interpersonal relationships and social interactions negatively. Cell phones have increased tendencies of multitasking, a trend responsible for accidents in our roads. This has resulted in violation of social norms as well as being a risk to personal security. Cell phones have led to social evils such as ‘sexting’, harassment and bullying of teens, in addition to creating less unity with families and friends.
Despite the few setbacks observed, humankind has made tremendous strides since the introduction of cell phones. Good management, planning and training, will increase the positive impact of cell phones in our lives and tremendously ease the life of humankind.
